The goal of the interdisciplinary joint project MITODE (for "MInderung des TOrfeinsatzes in DEutschland") is to bring scientific support to the German Ministry of Agriculture in its strategy to reduce peat use in substrates in Germany. Important questions will be explored like the adaption of horticultural systems, the availability of alternative substrate components and the technical, economical, ecological and social impacts of their production and use. Based on our future results, the goal is to provide scenarii for possible progress and sound advices for the decision-makers.
